Heavy Rain is an interactive drama brought to us by Quantic Dream. Heavy Rain is not your average game; it is a quality experiment with lots of depth. It is a concept game which pulls you into a deep story line.
Heavy Rain follows the story of four individuals, all on the lookout for the Origami Killer. Ethan Mars is the depressed father. Madison Page is a photo journalist who is always in the right spot at the right time. Norman Jayden is a FBI profiler who will do anything to capture the killer, and Scott Shelby is the loveable yet tough private detective. The story follows as such: your son goes missing, and you play through the story putting the clues together to catch the deadly Origami Killer. You get to play as each character in the game, so the story unfolds from four different unique perspectives.
There are many great aspects to this game with minimal downsides. As you follow the story, the game play mechanics feel good. When involved in one of the many action sequences, the push button aspects of the game feels smooth. The only problem with the game play controls is actually trying to walk around; there the controls are sloppy and often your character doesn’t go where you want. The graphics live up to the Playstation standards. Heavy Rain places you in a dark, wet environment which makes you feel like you need an umbrella just to play. Unfortunately for Heavy Rain, games such as Uncharted 2 set a new precedent for voice acting. Heavy Rain cut scenes are almost amazing, but the bad voice over is enough to let your thoughts wander to what you’re going to be eating tonight.
Heavy Rain offers the trophy hound in you a chance to rack up over fifty trophies. Heavy Rain also has a unique feel and comes close to a choose your own adventure books that we use to read. This game is packed with quick decision making moments which could have a direct impact on the rest of your game. The dramatic experience is enough to give any movie lover long sessions with the game. For the video game collector, this is a must buy because of the unique concept, and you will want to go through it more than once just to see what other outcomes you can come up with. This video game will not only appeal to the movie lover and the video game collector; for everyone else I will say that it is a must play. I give Heavy Rain 8 out of 10.
